CERES Environmental Park - 17th Feb, 2015
Phoenix travelled to Brunswick to visit CERES, an environmental park where they have communal gardens and markets as well as educational facilities.
We started the day with a tour of the park with our guide for the day, Ian. We told us about the grounds and how the area used to be a tip. He took us through an energy efficient house and showed us a rain garden. Out the back of the house was a veggie patch where some of us ate the plants. There was a dead possum in the backyard. We then went to see the communal gardens and see how some people are growing veggies and others are growing fruit or flowers. We looked at the worm farms and did an activity in the gardens to find out about Ph levels in soil. I bought some fruit at the market for lunch. After lunch we did an activity where we answered some questions and found out how big our environmental footprint was. Mine was pretty good. We then spoke to another guide who helped us to plan our school garden. The thing we need to remember is to plant what we want to eat. What I learnt at CERES - I learnt that we may not have the right Ph levels to grow potatoes so I may not be able to do the individual project I wanted to. Highlight of the day - Hearing Brooke talk to chickens. |
