My Project: Moss Graffiti on the shed wall
My class is creating a garden behind our maintenance shed and each student is doing their part. Some are creating the garden beds, some are responsible for developing and installing the watering system, there's a group working on creating a worm farm, another making arches for beans and lattice work for other climbers and a student is investigating the surfaces between the beds for drainage, clean walkways and of course cost. Everyone has something to plant. Some students have a couple of things to plant - vegetables, flowers and herbs. So they all have a personal project that, once brought together, creates our class project, our very own garden. My personal project is going to be a bit of a centrepiece. It's a sign, hanging on the shed wall that makes one side of our perimeter and it's going to be made of moss!
All of us, the students and I, have been using Pinterest to get ideas for the garden. I let Tanisha have my original project idea, a potato tower made from spare tyres, as her personal project. In turn, I took Tom's personal project idea of the Moss Graffiti, as he's moved on to watering systems with Lachlan.
Pinterest is full of moss graffiti pins telling us how to make the graffiti but there aren't many pins from people who have actually done it and been successful. I've read a couple of different ideas and I'm going to use these school holidays to test a couple of methods in my own back yard.
I still have to work out a couple of things and I'm holding off getting attached to an idea until I figure out which method is going to work. I need to decide if I can write directly on to the shed or attach wood to it first so it looks like a sign. I'd love to write directly on the shed but I suspect that the moss won't grow well on Colourbond. If I use wood, I wonder what time of wood would look best and what would help the moss the best.
I also need to decide what I want to write or design. My first thought was just the word Phoenix. This way, it's still applicable in years to come when (hopefully) this project is developed and improved upon in years to come. I wondered if we could do a picture of a phoenix but I'm not that artistic and we change our logo every year. Here's some pictures of what I hope it will look like.

After a couple of hours of research, I see it's very hard to find someone who has done this. Many of the pictures come from "pre fabricated moss". I'll try some of the recipes over the holidays and also see if I can get my hands on the pre-fab moss.
